Background check

Chiefly a US term. A background check is a broad label for screening someone before they take a role.

In the UK, that broad US phrase is usually too vague. England and Wales use DBS checks at defined levels; Scotland uses PVG; Northern Ireland uses AccessNI. Those are named statutory schemes with eligibility rules, not one generic “background check” product for any role.
