Chiefly a US term. Background check is a broad label for pre-role screening. In Australia the nearest named checks are a National Police Check and, for child-related roles, a Working with Children Check.

In Australia, the nearest named checks are a National Police Check and, for child-related roles, a Working with Children Check or Blue Card in Queensland. Those are not interchangeable, and Working with Children clearances are not automatically portable across state borders.
