In its home market, PTO often combines categories that UK employers describe more separately. In UK workplaces, the usual term is annual leave or holiday, with sickness absence handled on its own footing rather than being casually folded into a single PTO label.

If a UK manager reads a US policy saying someone is “using PTO”, the practical meaning is usually that the person is taking approved paid leave from work. The detail to check is what kind of leave the US employer has bundled into that bank.

Different elsewhere: in the US, PTO is a normal workplace term. In the UK, saying holiday or annual leave is usually clearer and more natural.
