PTO

Chiefly a US term. PTO means paid time off: a leave bank employees use for vacation, personal time, or short absences.

In Australian workplaces, the usual term is annual leave, and other leave types are usually named more directly as sick leave, personal leave, or long service leave rather than being bundled casually under PTO. That makes PTO understandable, but not the natural Australian label for ordinary scheduling conversations.

For rostered teams, the operational question is still the same one a US team is asking: is the absence approved, how much notice was given, and what cover is needed? The local difference is the language and the legal framework around each leave type.

Different elsewhere: in the US, PTO is standard workplace vocabulary. In Australia, annual leave is the natural equivalent for ordinary planned paid leave.
