PTO means paid time off: employer-approved paid leave used for vacation, personal time, or short absences.
In Canada the term is understood, especially in multinational or US-influenced workplaces, but many employers still talk more naturally about vacation time, paid leave, or a named leave category under provincial or federal rules. That means the phrase is usable, but it is not as dominant or universal as it is in the US.
For scheduling, the important distinction is whether the absence is part of planned paid leave, sickness, or some other protected leave type. The label on the policy may vary by employer, but the employment-standards framework still depends on the province, territory, or Canada Labour Code if the workplace is federally regulated.
Different elsewhere: in the US, PTO is the default label for many employer leave banks. In Canadian workplaces, vacation time or paid leave is often the plainer local wording.
