A US policy saying someone is “on vacation” usually means the person is taking approved paid leave from work. In the UK the normal terms are holiday and annual leave. The practical point is simple, but the legal frame is not identical: UK holiday entitlement sits under statutory paid leave rules rather than under a US PTO vocabulary.
