Provincial employment standards

Provincial employment standards are the rules on hours, overtime, minimum wage, public holidays, and vacation in each Canadian province or territory. Federally regulated workplaces sit under the Canada Labour Code.

Provincial employment standards are the rules on hours of work, overtime, minimum wage, public holidays, and vacation in each Canadian province or territory.

There is no single national overtime rule, national vacation entitlement, or national minimum wage for most workplaces. Ontario example only: most employees are due overtime at 1.5× after 44 hours in a work week; the general minimum wage is C$17.60 an hour to 30 September 2026 and C$17.95 an hour from 1 October 2026. Other provinces set their own acts and figures. Federally regulated industries — banks, telecom, airlines, interprovincial transport, and the other listed federal workplaces — sit under the Canada Labour Code, not the provincial employment standards act.

At-will employment is not a Canadian doctrine. Reasonable notice or pay in lieu applies.
