Overstaffing

Overstaffing is a scheduling situation where more people are assigned to a shift than the workload requires.

It’s most common in shift-based environments where demand is hard to predict. A store expecting a busy Saturday might schedule eight people and find three would have been enough. The extra staff have little to do, and the business pays for hours that don’t produce any return.

How overstaffing affects a business

The most direct effect is financial. Labor is typically one of the largest operating costs in shift-based businesses, and underutilized hours add up quickly. But the impact isn’t only budgetary. When there isn’t enough work to go around, some team members end up idle, which can create friction and make shifts feel disorganized.

For part-time or hourly workers, overstaffing often means shifts get cut or redistributed at short notice, creating real uncertainty around income and scheduling.
