In US usage, nonprofit is the everyday umbrella term for many mission-led organizations, whether they are charities, member organizations, cultural bodies, or advocacy groups. People often use it loosely, but the legal and tax details still matter. A nonprofit is not automatically the same thing as a registered charity in Canada, a charity in the UK, or a not-for-profit in Australia.
The word travels well, but the registration and tax consequences do not.
